Grooming

This website gives you the basic instructions for grooming, if you are inexperienced with horses, you should have someone help you the first few times.

Curry Comb

A curry comb is used to loosen dirt. To use the curry comb, rub it in a circular motion.

There  are 2 different types of curry combs. The first one is a plastic curry comb. This curry comb tends to be rougher, so its good for a muddy horse. The second one is the rubber curry comb. This one is good for when there's just a little bit of dirt or dust.

Hard Brush

A hard brush is to brush away the dirt loosened using the curry comb.

Soft Brush

A soft brush is used to remove any dirt the hard brush may have missed, and also to add a nice sheen to the coat.

Face Brush

A face brush is used to brush the dirt of the face. These brushes are usually smaller, and soft but still stiff.

Hoof Pick

A hoof pick is used to clean the dirt and rocks out of the horses hooves.

To use the hoof pick, first you need to get the horses hoof up. Grab the "cannon" (see horse part chart here) and gently but firmly pull up. Horse should lift their hoof.

Next using the hand closet to the horse, hold the hoof and use the other hand to gently scrape the dirt and rocks out of the hoof. You want to avoid picking at the "frog" (see chart below)

Now slowly let go of the horses hoof (watch out for your feet!) and the horse will put their hoof down. While picking the hoof, you want to make sure you do not sit on the floor, or crouch down, you should just bend down. If the horse decided to move, you will easily be able to move out of the way.
